Sustainability at the Austria eXtreme Triathlon

The Austria eXtreme Triathlon is not only a challenge for the athletes, but also a pioneer in terms of sustainability in sport. For four years, we have consistently implemented measures to minimize our ecological footprint and serve as a model for other events. The following is an overview of our sustainability strategy:

1. Stainless steel medals

One of the most innovative and sustainable measures concerns the medals awarded to the participants. Instead of using short-lived materials, our medals are made of high-quality stainless steel. If a medal is not awarded in one year, it is not thrown away. Instead, it is sanded down and re-lasered so that it can be used again the following year. This means that not a single medal goes unused and the material cycle is closed.

2. Avoid plastic

We have consciously decided against using plastic tableware at our supply stations. Instead, we rely on:

  • Wooden bowls: These are made from natural, biodegradable materials and are reusable.

  • Recyclable cups: Our cups are made from materials that can be recycled after the event. This way we avoid unnecessary plastic waste and actively contribute to conserving resources.

3. Avoiding waste

The overarching goal of our sustainability strategy is to produce no waste at all. We achieve this through various measures, such as:

  • Information for athletes: Before the race, all participants are told that throwing waste into nature is strictly prohibited. If this happens, not only the athlete in question but the entire team will be excluded from the competition. This strict rule has proven to be effective and leads to respectful treatment of the environment.

  • Sustainable catering: We also pay attention to sustainability when catering for athletes by avoiding unnecessary packaging and offering food that is produced regionally and in an environmentally friendly way wherever possible.

4. Long-term goals

The Austria eXtreme Triathlon continues to strive to reduce its environmental impact year after year. We are constantly working to find innovative and sustainable solutions to minimize the event's carbon footprint.

Conclusion

Our commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in the philosophy of the Austria eXtreme Triathlon. From the responsible use of resources to waste avoidance, we have made it our mission to organize a sporting event that is in harmony with nature. Together with the athletes and helpers, we are setting an example for the protection of the environment and for the conscious use of our natural resources.
